How To Record "Real" Guitar With a Rock Band 3 Controller in GarageBand

If you’ve been keeping up with the technological arms race of music video games, you’re probably aware that Rock Band 3, released this October, features a Pro mode that teaches players to actually play guitar or keyboards. A real, stringed electric guitar is forthcoming, but at the moment, Pro guitar mode can only be played with the Mustang – a plastic controller with strings only for strumming, and a neck littered with buttons.

$150 gets you a controller for Rock Band 3 that also doubles as a MIDI controller.

Sure, it’s not a "real" instrument, but thanks to a MIDI output, you can use the Mustang to make very real music...

Marshall Headphones

After a long teaser campaign which I managed to steadfastly ignore, Marshall (yes, that Marshall) has announced two self-hyped pairs of headphones. Named the Major and Minor, they come as over-the-head cans and in-ear buds. Both look very nice.
And that’s no accident. Given that the product pages for both sets of headphones begin their slideshows with several pictures of the packaging, and then linger on the details (the same vinyls used in the famous amps is used for the headband, for example), it’s clear that these headphones are all about branding.
The Majors look a lot like the retro-tastic Panasonic RP-HTX7s, only squarer and blacker. They fold up into themselves for easy off-head transport, and come with a one-meter (just over three-feet) extension cord. And, of course, they come in a nice box.
The Minors are equally lovely to look at, with gold accents and a nice, tough-looking corded cable, and they also come with an inline remote and mic for use with phones. They also have an “air-click” gimmick on the buds, an extra piece of plastic (you choose the right size) which apparently locks the ‘buds into your ears.

As for price, the Majors are $100, the Minors $60 (and already sold-out). Whether these live up to the reputation of the legendary guitar amps, or whether they’re just a cynical brand cash-in along the lines of the Commodore PC or some horrible $50,000 ostrich-skin and diamond Leica will be revealed only by testing. If all you care about is looks, and are happy to take a chance on sound, then these are a pretty cheap fashion accessory.

Swedish House Mafia And Tiësto Take Partying To New Heights

Recently, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello — known better in clubs around the world as the Swedish House Mafia — dropped by the MTV headquarters. While we talked with them at great length about their new album and film "Take One," we just had to bring up a rather provocative tweet Axwell sent out into the Twitterverse recently. Hard partying and globe trotting are all in a day's work for some of the most successful DJs on the planet, but this friendly bunch took things to a whole new level recently after a huge night at Creamfields in the U.K.
Axwell tweeted, "@tiesto @therealingrosso @sangellolive Hanging out with Tiësto guarantees a hangover the day after — and perhaps a trashed airplane."
"It was after Creamfields, where we all played," Axwell told MTV news of how the evening began. "We had our tent, Tiësto had his stage. We were all going to Ibiza because we play on Mondays [at Pacha] and he also plays on Mondays [at Amnesia]." Tiësto then extended an invite to the Swedes for a ride over on his private plane on which the gang had a little post-show celebratory party.
"We didn't plan it, it just happened!" Angello added. "All of a sudden his tour manager showed up on the plane and was like 'I brought four bottles of Jagermeister and six bottles of champagne and we've got two hours.' We're like, 'OK!' "
According to Axwell, that's when the real fun kicked in. "So basically, Tiësto kind of took the lead and started spraying champagne in the plane — on the pilot!"
"Into the cockpit!" added Ingrosso.
Axwell went on to tell us that by the time the plane landed, they were up to their shins in champagne and Jagermeister. "We just fell out of the plane in Ibiza!" said Axwell. "And that was the last time we were on his plane.

Sandy Rivera & Rae – Hide U

A decade may have passed since Kosheen first exploded onto the scene with the seminal ‘Hide U’, but it’s lost none of its potency. Rae’s vocal and Sandy Rivera’s production skills turn this deep, atmospheric banger into a pure DJ weapon, with Rae surpassingeven the distinctively addictive tones of Sian Evans’ original vocal. The remix package is exceptionally strong with Norman Doray taking the cut to a whole new level of ferocity with a driving, progressive re-work alongside a typically deep, string-lead version by NYC’s finest Quentin Harris. Add to that two mixes from Rivera himself; a club versions that brings the striking synth stabs to the front of the mix and a bouncy, tech-house stormer with remix partner C. Castel

Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand

In every major dance club across Europe, DJs are spinning the new track from the producing duo Duck Sauce. It’s near the top of the charts across the continent — at No. 1 in Belgium. The radio version has just one simple lyric that doubles as the song’s title, and it’s spoken, not sung: “Barbra Streisand.”

The video for “Barbra Streisand” became a huge viral hit, and it features cameo appearances from Kanye West, Ezra Koenig, ?uestlove, Pharrell, DJ Premier and others.

Canadian DJ Alain Macklovitch, also known as A-Trak, is one half of Duck Sauce. He says the song has nothing to do with the singer. “There really is no relation nor rational reason behind the lyric and the title ‘Barbra Streisand,’” he tells Weekend All Things Considered host Guy Raz. “We just thought it would make people laugh.”
